Raven Rocks Gallery presents:
Sculpting the Invisible – Spirit Figures by Travis Suda
April 7 - May 4th, 2017
Opening reception April 7th, 4-7pm
The strong influences of Northwestern totem poles and the Southwestern iconic imagery are richly represented in this latest series of sculpted spirit figures by artist Travis Suda. Figurative creations in the artwork of these traditions, such as the Hopi Kachina, are seen as more than simply works of art. In the artist’s words, “It was seen as an immortal being, one that linked the spirit world with the physical realm. Often these Kachinas were said to contain the spirits of certain deities, natural forces or animals and these acted as a conduit of communication with the unseen world. I’ve made each one of these sculptures with the same spiritual intention.” This is a remarkably unique collection of sculpture is created in clay and driftwood. It is a blending of cultural perspectives seldom seen, and rarely accomplished with such refined artistry.
