Mermaids and mermen are found in myths and legends in many cultures the world round. My “Chinook” merman and orca represents the spirit of the salmon, an important fish both commercially and culturally in the Pacific Northwest. More importantly, Chinook salmon make up about eighty percent of the diet of a very special population of orcas, the Southern Resident killer whales. Sadly, as of September 2022, there were only 73 individuals left, which makes protecting our salmon of the utmost importance.
“Chinook” is needle-felted of MC-1 and Māori wool. Unlike many felted sculptures, I was able to make him without the need for an armature, a technique I learned from the accomplished felted doll artist, Anna Potapova.
