Story: Great-Uncle Hubert was “a character,” as my Mom would say, rolling her eyes and smiling. To a small child he was a wizard, surprises in his pockets, an elegant way of speaking and an uncanny knack for listening to little ones’ dreams and ambitions. He’d make surprise visits; send the odd letter with bright feathers and drawings of fanciful birds and critters. I wanted to be like him when I grew up – wise in the ways of the magic of life. One day he was gone as gently as he’d lived and there was a huge hole in my heart. I was told there was a letter waiting in trust for me when I turned thirty, but after a time I forgot all about it - creating myself as a successful adult took all my attention. When I woke to my third decade, I was at a loss, failed plans scattered at my feet, feeling at odds with fast tracks and ambition. When I blew out the thirty candles, that long ago letter was placed in my hands by my beaming parents – the legacy home of a Wise-One; my Uncle speaking to me across time and space. A house no one could find on a map but I homed to it as if I’d been there a million times. Perched on a jutting rock, high above an inland sea, it opened its magic to me as if to an old friend, its contents sparkling and bright as if only one empty day had past instead of fifteen years.
Dear Uncle, I have reclaimed mySelf in your words and the wild and wonderful magic of your home!
