Story: We were a crabby family, to put it bluntly. Growled at each other at breakfast, raced out the door to the many jobs, lessons, trainings, meetings, doings that occupied our days. We snapped at each other each evening, stayed up late making sure every thing was done. My parents were young compared to some of my friends’, but they looked old around their eyes. Then one tense dinner at my aunt’s – who I loved for her dancing eyes, crazy clothes and air of joy – it all came to a head. That night my aunt was furious. “Enough already!” she yelled during one of our bickering sessions, hands on hips, eyes sparking. “You have got to stop this RIGHT NOW!” My parents were so stunned that they complied meekly with her insistence that we spend our spring break at her cabin at the shore. “Its enchanted,” she said, “but I’m not telling you how. YOU find out. And, no TV, phones or gadgets or I’ll pull the electricity!” (We all groaned at that ultimatum!) Well, we went – and we stayed an extra week despite all the stuff to do. And we laughed and played games, slept in the sun lulled by the waves and the faint tinkling music we never quite placed. We hugged once more, shyly, and enjoyed each other’s company, rarely to return to “crabby” again. And ever after we smiled knowingly at the word “enchanted” and packed our bags for those shores as often as possible.
