He Travels for Work by Mary Jo Oxrieder, Fine Art Print

Story: He’s a big-hearted kind of guy. You’d look to him first if there was an emergency. He’d be the one staying calm, taking charge, being courageous and coming up with a plan. The company had him traveling often. Fixing things. Smoothing things. Organizing. Instructing. Some assignments seemed more secretive to me than others. The door would close, then he’d leave quickly. I wondered but no one else seemed to notice.

One day, out walking, I came upon a parking lot hidden in a grove of oaks. The only occupant the sweetest little bubble of a car I’d ever seen with extra sturdy roof racks. As I was wondering if this was a car from a movie, a taxi dropped someone off at the entrance and spun away. There he was, Starbucks coffee in one hand, laptop case and bag in the other. Hidden in the trees, I watched as he settled his things in the backseat and pulled a gizmo from his pocket that sent out a high pitched whistle. I froze when a dragon (I’m not kidding, a real live DRAGON!) dropped lightly into the lot. They bowed solemnly to each other then did a high five – the human hand tiny against the dragon’s front foot. As the dragon leapt back into the air and circled, the guy got in the car and opened his laptop on a ledge where the steering wheel should have been. Then he rolled down the window and motioned with his hand. The dragon swooped down and snagged the car, gripping the roof racks. As the dragon lifted with huge beats of its wings, it turned to me and winked. My co-worker turned, too, looked me right in the eye and gave me one of his slow smiles, a finger to his lips for silence. Then POOF! they were gone…
